The Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Sciences’ Department of Chemistry and Biology is in a phase of dynamic growth, both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Ryerson offers an M.A.Sc. program and a new PhD program in Environmental Applied Science and Management, and an M.Sc. program in Molecular Science. New faculty members will have the opportunity to supervise students in these graduate programs.

The Department invites applications for two tenure-track positions in Biology at the Assistant Professor level, subject to funding availability. Outstanding candidates may be appointed at the Associate Professor level.

  1. Ecology/Evolutionary Biology: The new faculty member will have a PhD, post-doctoral experience, and an outstanding research record in Evolutionary Biology, Population Genetics, or Ecology using molecular approaches. Expertise in computational biology is an asset.
  2. Molecular Genetics/Molecular Biology: Consideration will be given to candidates interested in developing a research program that employs advanced biochemical and molecular technologies using a cell culture system or a non-vertebrate eukaryotic model organism to address key questions in these fields.

The successful applicants will complement a Department with strengths in Environmental Biology, Microbial Ecology, and Molecular Biology. Model research organisms in the Department currently include invertebrate animals, algae, plants (Brassica, corn, beans), eukaryotic animal cells lines, prokaryotes, and viruses. New faculty members are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching and research, establish strong, independent, externally funded research programs, and contribute to the growing teams of researchers in the Department. The candidates will be expected to teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and contribute to the graduate program in Molecular Science.

The Department of Cell & Systems Biology at the University of Toronto invites applications for a tenure track faculty position to be appointed at the Assistant Professor level in the field of Systems Biology to begin July 1, 2009.

The Council was formally established in 1982 by statute to promote and assist basic, clinical and applied research in the health sciences in Manitoba. It does so by funding research, promoting knowledge transfer and advising the Government of Manitoba on health research issues and developments. Following a major review involving key stakeholders in Manitoba's health science community, a Manitoba Health Research Strategy was developed in 2006 that resulted in strengthening the role of the Council in the support and coordination of health research in the province and in the reform of its governance and management processes. The Executive Director will provide strategic, creative leadership at a time of growth and innovation. Reporting to the Council through its Chair, the Executive Director is the senior administrative officer of the Council and, subject to the plenary powers of the Council, provides leadership, planning and management direction for the Council's programs. The successful candidate will be an innovative leader and effective communicator with a substantial record of achievement related to health research and its development.

The Department of Biology invites applications for a tenure-track position, at the Assistant Professor level, in the area of Molecular Biology, subject to final budgetary approval and the candidate’s successful application to the NSERC UFA program (for more information on eligibility criteria for the NSERC UFA program, see www.nserc.gc.ca/professors_e.asp?nav=profnav&lbi=c7). Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant field, an outstanding record of research, a clear potential for continued research success, and a commitment to excellence in teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a strong, externally funded research program that complements and extends existing research strengths in the Department. Candidates whose research makes extensive use of contemporary molecular biology techniques for addressing fundamental research questions in the broad area of Environment and Biological Systems will be given priority to support the development and implementation of a new interdisciplinary graduate program of the same name. In addition to research, the successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate- and graduate-level courses in his/her area of interest. The Department has both laboratory and field research facilities (including a Central Analytical Facility with microarray reader and imaging facility with light, fluorescent and confocal microscopes), and will have newly upgraded research, plant growth and animal-holding facilities by 2008-2009.

Teaching duties may change based on the academic and operational needs of the Department. Health Canada’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program provides opportunities for highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to work with prominent Health Canada scientists in an innovative research environment that promotes excellence in science to support informed decision-making.

Health Canada is seeking highly qualified postdoctoral fellows in the following areas:

  • Social Sciences
  • Biological, Physical and Environmental Sciences
  • Policy research and analysis
About 50 Health Canada researchers are willing to serve as mentors in their areas of expertise.

This program is open to Canadian citizens and permanent residents who reside in Canada or abroad. Non-Canadians may also be considered for fellowships under special circumstances.

Postdoctoral fellowships are awarded for one year, potentially renewable for a second year, with an annual stipend of $45,000.
